Adithya Cattamanchi

Adithya Cattamanchi, MD

Principal Investigator

The major focus of my research program is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with tuberculosis (TB). Each year, nearly 2 million of the 8 million estimated patients with TB worldwide are “missed”. The failure to diagnose TB rapidly and initiate treatment contributes to worse outcomes for patients and ongoing transmission of the disease in the community. To address this challenge, I have developed an innovative research program that spans the translational research spectrum. First, my group collaborates actively with basic scientists and engineers to identify novel biomarkers for TB screening and diagnosis and to develop point-of-care platforms for biomarker detection. Second, we conduct primary studies at field sites in Uganda and the Philippines and systematic reviews to support guideline development for TB diagnostics. We focus not only on diagnostic accuracy but also on evaluating the impact of new diagnostics on clinical decisions and patient outcomes. Third, we measure the quality of care delivered to patients with TB and use implementation science-based approaches to develop and test strategies to improve care delivery. Our expertise in this area has led to collaborations to study and improve care delivery for other lung health conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD) in domestic and international settings.

Christopher Berger

Christopher Berger, MD

Clinical Fellow, Medicine

Christopher Berger, MD, MSIMT is an Assistant Professor in the UCSF Division of Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine, clinically based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. His research focuses on improving tuberculosis screening, diagnosis, and treatment programs globally through the use of novel implementation science methods including human-centered design principles. He works with Dr. Adithya Cattamanchi on projects in the Philippines to improve the diagnostic and clinical tools used in MDR and XDR TB and in Uganda designing improved versions of the globally utilized “Directly Observed Therapy” toolkit.

Devan Jaganath, MD MPH

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

I conduct clinical and translational research that applies epidemiological and data science methods to identify and evaluate novel biomarkers, diagnostics, and digital health solutions for TB. I am particularly interested in improving the diagnosis and management of TB in vulnerable populations with paucibacillary disease, including people living with HIV and children.

Midori Kato-Maeda

Professor, Medicine

I work on studies that aim to identify mycobacterial factors that 1) have an impact on tuberculosis treatment outcomes, 2) cause drug resistance, and 3) are associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission.

Priya Shete

Assistant Professor, Medicine

I am an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco where my research has focused on improving access to and quality of tuberculosis (TB) care for vulnerable populations. My research has highlighted the central importance of patient and health system barriers to quality of TB care in high burden settings. My portfolio leverages methods in implementation research, social epidemiology, modelling, and health economics that will allow us to better study and understand these barriers to care as well as to provide tools that will allow national TB programs the ability to design and implement interventions that curb these barriers. My research background is enhanced by my experience working with Global TB Programme of the World Health Organization to support countries such as Brazil, South Africa and Viet Nam in developing research agendas and policy translation tools to integrate social determinants and implementation science into their existing TB control programs. I have also served as a public health advisor for USAID with a focus on health system strengthening. I serve as an attending physician on the Pulmonary Consult Service, in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, and in the Department of Public Health Tuberculosis Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

Christina Yoon

Assistant Professor, Medicine

My research is focused on identifying accurate and affordable TB diagnostic tools to improve the efficiency of TB diagnosis and delivery of TB preventive therapy for high-risk populations in resource-limited settings. I have experience in leading international studies of diagnostic accuracy and longitudinal cohort studies.

Staff

Barbara Alonso

Administrative Analyst

I provide administrative support to Dr. Cattamanchi's team, and assist with shipping, meetings and maintaining our websites for the team as well as the R2D2 project. I also have a background in graphic design.

Catherine Cook

Clinical Research Coordinator

I am a community and global health research professional experienced in large, international,  multi-center studies. I am currently coordinating the R2D2 TB Network and supporting digital adherence technology research.

Robert Castro

Research Data Analyst

I work with Dr. Adithya Cattamanchi and Dr. Devan Jaganath on international research studies to identify novel biomarkers and diagnostics for TB. I am interested in the application of data science and epidemiologic methods to improve the diagnosis of TB in people living with HIV and children.

Rebecca Crowder

Research Data Analyst

I am interested in applying epidemiologic and implementation science methods to clinical TB research. I work with Dr. Adithya Cattamanchi on international studies to evaluate new tools and strategies for improving diagnosis and management of TB in Uganda and the Philippines.

Jillian Kadota

Research Data Analyst

I work with Dr. Adithya Cattamanchi and Dr. Priya Shete on implementation science-based research studies to evaluate novel strategies for improving tuberculosis outcomes among high-risk populations, mostly in Uganda. I am interested in patient-centered interventions designed to target economic and social barriers to care, and methods for identifying those most vulnerable to poor outcomes. Most of my prior experience includes designing, implementing, and evaluating social protection and other interventions among people with TB disease and/or people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.

Kinari Shah

Research Data Analyst

I work on the R2D2 TB Network Study, supporting Vietnam and India. I am interested in understanding patient preferences and centricity in TB diagnostics and care
